What Are The Pros & Cons of Vehicle Window Tinting?

Window tinting is a modification to windows involving a thin film or layer applied to the vehicle's glass surfaces. Often, the tint is colored darkly (in various degrees or levels of opacity). Here are the pros of window tints and the purpose they serve:

  • Lessen glare from the sun
  • For privacy purposes
  • Ensure safety/security protection
  • Filtering out harmful UV rays
  • Provides thermal insulation

Before you take your vehicle to the shop for window tinting services, you should do your research. Each state has different laws and regulations regarding window tinting. The laws classify tints according to “Visible Light Transmission” or VLT percentages. For instance, a tint of 60% VLT means that the tint lets 60% of the visible light spectrum through. So the lower the VLT percentage, the darker the shade will be.

Every state sets different minimum percentage requirements for the different sections of your vehicle: front, side, and rear windows. In California, your window tints must be higher than 70% VLT for the front-side windows. The rear window and rear side windows can be at any VLT % of your liking, and the front can only have a non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield.

Here are a few of the cons of tinted windows:

  • Bubbling - Over time, the film can start producing bubbles, especially in hot, dry areas. It can be very unflattering and affect the opacity of the window.
  • Challenges with National Travel - Driving from state to state can be a little tricky if you have window tinting. Some states have stricter rules, like New Jersey, where window tinting is all-around illegal.
  • Reverse Effect - Rather than improving privacy, tint can catch the attention of others easier (including pesky thieves). Tinting can suggest that you have valuable items in your vehicle.
